Corbyn, a member of the College of Surgeons in London, was assistant surgeon to the Bengal establishment. His letter to the East India Company was sent from Sauger on 7 September 1819. The letter was passed on to Sir Gilbert Blane, physician to the Prince of Wales. Blane read Corbyn's letter and commented on it at the 9 May 1820 meeting of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society in London.
