A Lancet reporter described three operations in the theatre at St. George's Hospital "in which the vapour of ether was exhibited again by Dr. Snow, in the presence of Sir B. C. Brodie, Mr. Keate, and a numerous assembly of spectators."

The surgeons were Mr. Hawkins, Mr. Tatum, and Mr. Cutler.

Snow used the first modification to the ether inhaler contrived by Mr. Ferguson, which permitted the anesthetist to regulate the ether/atmospheric air proportion administered via a two-way valve.
